The Summer breeze
Blew the sunlight away.
The stars were candles
On an anniversary cake
For a non-existent union.
There you sat smoking
Your last cigarette
Reading me Hemingway;
Like it was instinctive
To be so devoted.
Your eyes were different;
You'd forgotten her name
And I his.
The words on my page
Were written in the ink
Of your veins;
Given knowingly and willingly.
But the hardest part
Was waking up;
Your face turning to dust,
And experiences dividing us.
I was content,
Until finding we were similar.
I am satisfied
Just by knowing your name.
